Feb 09, 10 at 12:07 amNot only is there a chance that a driver can start in last place and win, Tony Stewart did it at Pocono this year. Generally, the grid places are determined by qualifying- fastest is first and so one. If qualifying is rained out, it is determined by points. The season consists of 36 points races. They also run the Budweiser Shootout the weekend before the season starts. Daytona 500 qualifying is determined by two “Duels”. And the All-Star Race in May is a non-points event. Most of the cars have teammates these days. There are only a handful of single-car operations left, and they are fairly unsuccessful.

Feb 09, 10 at 6:38 amThe points paying season is 36 races long, with 2 qualifying races in daytona and an all-star race. 43 cars make the field, and they set the grid based on the fastest qualifiers and about 6 spots for owners points and a past champions provisional. If anyone changes a motor or goes to a backup car, they lose they starting spot and drop to the rear of the field, 43rd starting spot. Tony Stewart as mentioned before won from starting last not to long ago, as he wrecked his primary car and went to a backup car
